Professional biography

Built through service, study, and practice.

In 2009, Apex ID Performance founder James J.F. Manipis began his professional fitness career in the United States Army, where he discovered a passion for developing physical performance and helping others become stronger, healthier, and better prepared for the demands placed upon them.

During his first duty assignment at Fort Drum, New York, James was assigned by his First Sergeant to participate in and lead the unit's Army Physical Fitness Training program. Soldiers were responsible for rotating through the role of instructor and developing the week's physical training program for the unit.

As a new Soldier at his first duty station, James quickly learned that effective training required more than simply writing workouts. Fort Drum's harsh winter conditions meant that weather and environmental factors had to be carefully considered when designing training sessions. Learning to adapt training to different conditions became an early and valuable part of his development as a fitness professional.

Within three years, what began as an assignment became something he genuinely enjoyed. James began volunteering for additional temporary duties and training responsibilities whenever opportunities arose. He eventually became a subject matter expert in preparing newly assigned Soldiers for integration into the unit and supported the 10th Mountain Division's Brigade Support Battalions during pre-deployment field training exercises, including work with treatment platoons.

In 2012, James was reassigned to U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, South Korea. Building upon the experience he had gained at Fort Drum, he continued expanding his knowledge and sought opportunities to develop additional specialties. One of those opportunities came through the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP).

Fortunately, James' new unit was led by a First Sergeant who was a Level 4 Close Quarters Combatives instructor and helped members of the unit pursue their own certifications. James earned two MACP certifications: Basic Close Quarters Combatives (Level 1) and Tactical Close Quarters Combatives (Level 2).

After being promoted to Sergeant (E-5), James was given greater responsibility for developing and organizing physical training programs for the unit. He was able to delegate training responsibilities to the Soldiers under his leadership, giving him valuable experience not only as a trainer, but also as a leader responsible for developing other trainers.

In 2014, James was reassigned to Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he spent the final years of his active-duty military career. After sustaining an injury during his assignment, he was honorably discharged from the Army in 2016.

Throughout his active-duty career, James had the opportunity to train and develop hundreds of Soldiers. His military experience gave him a strong foundation in physical conditioning, leadership, discipline, adaptability, and performance-based training. More importantly, it taught him that effective fitness programs cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Training has to be adapted to the individual, their environment, their goals, and the demands of their everyday life.

After becoming a Veteran, James continued investing in his education and professional development. He earned a Master's Degree in Sports and Health Sciences with a concentration in Exercise Science, while continuing to expand his knowledge through workshops, conferences, continuing education, and specialized certifications.

Over the years, his coaching experience has expanded well beyond the military. James has worked with a diverse range of clients, including disabled Veterans, warehouse and physically demanding workers, overweight and obese civilians, and Reserve and National Guard personnel. Each population has presented its own challenges, giving him the opportunity to continually refine his approach to coaching, conditioning, movement, and long-term fitness.

His career has also taken him beyond traditional fitness settings. While working in Southern California, James transitioned from training Soldiers in Army settings to providing one-on-one personal coaching, eventually expanding into online fitness coaching and the development of his own supplement brand.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when James became temporarily stranded in the Philippines during the country's lockdowns, he continued coaching clients remotely. That experience further reinforced his belief that effective coaching does not depend on a particular gym, location, or piece of equipment. It depends on having the knowledge and ability to create a plan that works for the person in front of you.

Today, James brings together his military experience, academic background, professional certifications, and years of hands-on coaching into Apex ID Performance.

His mission is simple: to help people build strength, improve their physical capabilities, and develop sustainable fitness habits through training that is purposeful, adaptable, and built around the individual.

From Army physical training to one-on-one coaching, James' career has always centered around one principle: training should prepare you for the life you actually live.

The point of view

Training is not just what you do. It is how you learn to keep a promise to yourself.

James's work has always centered on the connection between physical performance and personal standards. From military training environments to coaching everyday people, the lesson stays the same: lasting progress is built through consistency, structure, and the willingness to do the work again tomorrow.

That is the idea behind Apex. It is a performance brand for people who want their habits to match their ambition, and for partners who want to create that same standard inside their own communities.
